After four decades steering transformations from London boardrooms to the deserts of Saudi Arabia, I’ve learned one unshakable truth: successful change isn’t about the technology—it’s about the people. Early Foundations – Character and First Principles
Picture a young officer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, drilling in the rain, learning that true leadership isn’t barked orders—it’s earning trust under pressure. My early career in the military wasn’t just about salutes and strategy; it taught me discipline, team dynamics, and the power of preparation. Coding for the Army, I bridged structured thinking with innovation, learning to delegate responsibility while owning accountability. These lessons—forged in the crucible of high-stakes environments—became the bedrock of my approach to leadership and still guide every client engagement.
Career Evolution – Mastering Change Across Industries
In the 1990s, I cut my teeth at Sherwood Computers, wrangling legacy systems for an insurance brokerage. Then came a pivotal moment at Mercedes Benz, managing the SAP implementation that transformed their finance operations. I learned that change isn’t about software—it’s about people adapting to it. The DOT com boom thrust me into independent consulting, tackling fast-paced challenges like the IBIS Banking systems for an Italian bank. By the 2000s, I was leading high-stakes projects for British Airways, Lloyds of London, and the Ministry of Defence, each teaching me to navigate complexity with precision and to continuously improve.
The global stage called in 2003, with projects for Goldman Sachs in America and India, followed by two decades in the Middle East with giants like Saudi Aramco and SABIC. Leading multi-cultural teams taught me to keep communication simple and strategies sharp. Alongside managing transformations, I developed training certifications, ensuring teams weren’t just ready for change but equipped to own it.
Defining Moments – Lessons That Shaped Leadership Philosophy
The Y2K crisis was a wake-up call. As I built emergency continuity systems for Railtrack, I saw firsthand how disbelief and unpreparedness could derail (pun intended) organizations. The lesson? Test everything, assume nothing. Leading global teams for Goldman Sachs and Saudi Electric reinforced the power of clear communication—complex jargon fails, but simplicity unites. In 2012, while training at RasGas, I discovered my knack for teaching: given prep time, I could make any subject stick, transforming teams’ capabilities.
COVID-19 in 2020 echoed Y2K’s chaos—organizations hesitated, doubted, and scrambled. My response? Double down on business continuity and structured planning. Cultural challenges, like favoritism at Saudi Electric, taught me to champion merit-based leadership, ensuring fairness drives success. Each crisis sharpened my ability to turn obstacles into opportunities.
